NORTH CAROLINA — A blind man was able to see for the first time in 33 years thanks to what’s called a bionic eye.
According to Duke Medicine’s website, Larry Hester, 66, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa more than three decades ago.
His doctor implanted a special sensor into his eye on Sept. 10, and the device was activated about three weeks later.
A YouTube video posted by Duke Medicine shows Hester’s reaction as the switch is flipped. His wife, Jerry, is also ecstatic and kisses her husband immediately.
Hester is just the seventh person in the country to have the device implanted.
